People have been putting dogs to work for thousands of years—hunting, herding, rescuing, and guarding. Now that we know their sense of smell is forty times more sensitive than humans', their job descriptions have expanded. Dogs parachute out of planes into battle zones to sniff out bombs, root out tiny bedbugs, and find the smallest trace of cancer and other diseases. They help rescue people lost in the woods or buried by avalanches and earthquakes. They even help protect endangered plants and animals.
