Jerusalem: An Illustrated Archaeological Guide and Journal

This book is intended to accompany a journey to the greatest of all ancient cities, Jerusalem, where the lives of kings, prophets, and their God shaped not only history but all of Western culture. After years of touring students and teaching archeology and art history in Israel, we have found that the flood of information and emotions aroused can often be confusing and overwhelming.

It serves then as a tool, in words and images, to help the visitor retain not only the outline, facts, and details of history, but also provides a means to keep a record of the insights gained through the journaling process. Our hope is to make your journey to this incredible city informative and personal. The research is based on the latest archaeological discoveries made in the city of Jerusalem and vicinity.

The illustrations are meant to peel back the layers of history so that its complex facets may be better understood. We have chosen four key figures—David, Herod the Great, Jesus, and Mohammad—each representing pillars of influence that shaped the philosophy, art, and architecture of not only Jerusalem, but much of the world. Throughout the book, you'll find text boxes with primary sources.
