The Bald Eagle

Since ancient times, the eagles broad wings, strong talons, and fierce expression have captured peoples imaginations. In Greek mythology, the eagle was the only bird that lived among the gods on Mount Olympus. Some Native Americans believed that the bird caused thunder as it flew. Others considered the eagle to be a messenger from the creator of the universe. In 1782 the Founding Fathers chose the bald eagle as the national symbol of the United States. Since then it has been one of the most treasured emblems of American democracy.

The Statue of Liberty

For many people all over the world the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom and the United States. But the idea for the Statue of Liberty did not begin in the United States. It began as a casual remark about freedom and friendship made at a dinner party in France in 1865.
